Virgin America Reportedly Gets Takeover Bids From JetBlue, Alaska Airlines

Well that was fast. Less than a week after Virgin America realized it was a pretty hot commodity and said it would consider putting itself up for sale, the company has reportedly received not one, but two takeover bids from rival airlines.

Bloomberg, citing people familiar with the matter, reports that JetBlue Airways and Alaska Air Group have both expressed interest in acquiring Virgin’s U.S. brand.

According to the sources, discussions between Virgin America and the two suitors are ongoing.

While it’s possible that the airline could call the whole thing off, the sources say that if talks continue an official sale could be announced as soon as next week.

Alaska and JetBlue declined to comment on the bids, telling Bloomberg they don’t discuss rumors or speculation.

Virgin America is staying mum on the topic, saying it doesn’t comment on speculation related to mergers or acquisitions.
