Meal Box Companies Hope To Hook You With Thanksgiving Boxes

If you’re in charge of cooking a Thanksgiving feast, wouldn’t it just be easier to have someone ship you a box filled with all of the ingredients and recipes that you need? No, we’re not talking about the entire bland frozen dinner in a box; these Thanksgiving boxes come from the popular new meal kit companies. Their plan is to simplify your holiday — and of course to hopefully recruit new customers into paying for meal boxes all year-round.

Bloomberg Technology checked out the holiday options from meal box startups. Martha Stewart’s partnership with the service Marley Spoon, for example, has resulted in a box that lets you serve dinner for ten people for $179. Meal options from the company Chef’d come with recipes from the New York Times and cost as much as $25 per person. Blue Apron, the biggest company in the category, doesn’t sell complete holiday meal boxes, but does sell boxes with everything but the turkey, and then sells turkeys separately.

It’s too late to order for this year, of course, but the meal box companies hope that you keep them in mind for the other winter holidays, and that you also stay with them year-round. Acquiring customers for these companies is a big challenge, but keeping them is an even bigger one.
