Yesterday, Sports Authority filed for bankruptcy, and right now they have two choices about how to go forward: sell out to a competitor or reorganize the company and their $1.1 billion in debt. they’re kicking off the proceedings by closing 140 stores. Here’s the preliminary list of stores that will close, which are scattered across the country but concentrated in Texas.
Since the chain grew by acquiring other sporting goods retailers, CEO Michael Foss explained to the Denver Post, there’s a lot of variation in their stores, what they can carry, and even something as simple as how big they are. Stores range from 8,000 to 80,000 square feet, which means that stores differ from each other drastically, sometimes in the same region.
Their options are to continue as a smaller version of Sports Authority, or to sell their stores to one or more competitors. Top sporting goods chain Dick’s is a likely buyer, and could acquire stores simply to close them down and eliminate the competition.
